This week’s Video Find of the Week features 19-year-old Monica Moore Smith from Boca Raton, Florida, and her amazing, upbeat cover of Who Is Fancy’s “Boys Like You.” Who Is Fancy’s version of the song also features Meghan Trainor and Ariana Grande.
Monica is a Latter-day Saint singer, actor, and dancer who, according to IMDb, is often mistaken for Taylor Swift. Many people may recognize her from the 2016 movie Saturday’s Warrior where she starred in the role of Julie Flinders. She also had leading roles in the 2017 productions Tim Timmerman, Hope of America and Deidra & Laney Rob a Train.
In the music video, Monica not only sings, but she also demonstrates her awesome dancing prowess. In the description of the video, she commented, “When I was introduced to blues dancing, I was hooked for life.” She also said that dancer/choreographer, Cody Till who appears in the video with her, created a special version to match the mood. The chorus of the song is what really helps to set the overall mood:
Try, try, try, to follow the rules
I break every one of them with boys like you
My oh my, doing what I always do
Yeah, I’m crossing every line to get to boys like you
Boys like you, you, tripping, freaking falling over boys like you
“Boys Like You” is a “swaying” Indie rock pop number in which the listener hears Who Is Fancy, Meghan Trainor, and Ariana Grande lyrically trying to win the man of their dreams. On 10 November 2015, Ariana Grande gave a sneak preview of “Boys Like You” via her Twitter account. Over the next few days, up until the time of release, the trio promoted their song on social media. On 23 November 2015, the song was officially released, and it was sent to radio stations for airplay on 1 December 2015. They performed the song on Dancing with the Stars season 21 finale on 24 November 2015, following Meghan Trainor’s performance of “Better When I’m Dancin’.”
