It is Christmas Day 2018. Families and friends gather to spend the day together, partaking of delicious feasts that have been prepared, enjoying casual conversation, and exchanging gifts. But, the question that begs an answer is, “In the midst of all the merriment, do we take the time to remember the real reason that we celebrate this season?”
We search for the perfect gift to give to a loved one or a special friend, but what gift do we give to Him who lay in Bethlehem’s manger on that first Christmas morning more than two centuries ago? The tiny baby that Mary held in her arms was God’s gift to all humanity – the greatest gift of all! What gift will we give in return?
Every year Mary Hiett writes a Christmas song as her gift to our Lord and Savior. In 2017, she wrote a song called “God in His Heaven Looked Down.” Here is the backstory in Mary’s own words.
God in Heaven Looked Down – By Mary Hiett
The year 2017 found me thinking about what song I would write for my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I had written three songs prior to this one.
There was absolutely no question what the song would be about, for the spirit spoke plainly to me. It was to be a tribute to God the Father. Thinking about this left me with a very daunting responsibility because not much is written about our Father in Heaven in this story. The thought that kept coming to me was that through His great love for the world, He gave us His only Begotten Son.
I did a lot of research about this subject and the Holy Spirit guided me to this song and message. I had the most marvelous acknowledgment from God when I listened to the final recording. The spirit that I felt in my bedroom was so strong. It felt like a phone booth filled with lots of people and there was no room left! I wept at the tribute I had created for my Eternal Father.
I will never forget that feeling! It was a very warm, but unfathomable and awe struck feeling of what I had done. I was humbled by this wonderful opportunity. No greater gift has ever been given to mankind than God giving to the world His Son to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. I am eternally grateful to them both, and yes, I believe that God in his Heaven looks down.
