Good Tidings of Great Joy

At this season of the year, hearts and minds turn towards that star in the east that led the way to the place where the newborn babe lay in a stable. What made the birth extraordinary special is that this was no ordinary child. This precious child whom Mary lovingly held in her arms is the Son of God. He is Emmanuel, which being interpreted is “God is with us.” Isaiah, the prophet of old, had foretold of this glorious birth centuries before. He said, “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).

Luke recounts the events of that holy night in Bethlehem in the second chapter of his gospel account – a narrative that is familiar to many. He tells us:

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so, it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn (Luke 2: 4-7).

Mary Hiett has composed a Christmas song that encompasses the emotions that must have been felt by all who were present at the blessed event. The song titled “The Night Christmas Was Born” not only tells a story of the events that took place, but it is also Mary’s testimony to anyone who may not believe in God, or His Son, Jesus Christ. Through her song, she shares the true meaning of Christmas. If this writer were to subtitle the song, he would call it “A Divine Story of Love” – for Christmas is the story of God’s infinite love for humanity and His gift of His Only Begotten Son to the World – the greatest gift ever known to mankind.

Every year for the last five years, Mary has written a Christmas song. “The Night Christmas Was Born” is the second Christmas song that she wrote. Allie Hymas (a valley friend where she lives) provided the vocals.

As you listen to the words of Mary’s awe-inspiring song, imagine being at the blessed event on that starry night as a choir of angels sang praises. Think about how you would have felt being in the presence of Him of whom the prophet Isaiah proclaimed, “ For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6) – a child was born – a Son was given.

The Night Christmas Was Born – Words and music by Mary Hiett. Vocals by Allie Hymas.

Joseph put Mary upon his donkey,
and they walked to Bethlehem.
Long long journey her load was heavy.
There was no room in the Inn.

In the stable, she was delivered,
Joseph laid Him in her arms.
Starlight streaming down from the heavens,
angels singing Gloria on high.

CHORUS:
Can you hear the singing of the angels?
Telling us of how it all began at night,
and do you see the star shine on the manger Christmas night.

The stable welcomed the Holy Baby
heaven filled the room with love.
Shepherds bow now beside the baby,
as the wise men journeyed on their way.

Manger creatures were oh so silent,
as they referenced that great night.
That first Christmas so long awaited,
yes, that night came forth as prophesied.

CHORUS:
Can you hear the singing of the angels?
Telling us of how it all began at night,
and do you see the star shine on the manger Christmas,
manger Christmas, manger Christmas night.

Can you hear the plodding of the camels?
Bringing GOLD and FRANKINCENSE and precious MYRRH,
and can you feel the heavens testifying,
of peace on earth good tidings unto men on earth,
and can you see the tears of all those bowing;
before the Prince of Peace and mighty King of Kings,
The King of Kings.
The King of Kings …that night.
