Monica Scott
Monica Scott is a stay-at-home mom who is kept busy from sunrise to sunset lovingly caring for her four children who range in ages from 4-years-old to 9 years-old. As writing music has always been one of her passions, she started arranging hymns in the evenings after she had tucked her kids into bed. The beauty and the softness of the music that she played made it feel more like she was playing lullabies for them. In her own words she recounts the wonderful experience:
My passion is in writing soothing, contemplative piano music. Perhaps it is because it is such a contrast from my every day, busy life as a stay-at-home mom. Writing music has always been my outlet and has helped to bring peace into my own life. I absolutely love arranging piano hymns because of the peace and spirit that they bring. As a mother of four young children, bedtime became such a time of chaos in our home. After I tucked them all into bed at night I began quietly playing and arranging hymns in the evenings as they fell asleep. The hymns seemed to calm them and lull them to sleep.
Monica grew up in a musical family where she learned to play the violin and the piano at an early age. She says, “Although I enjoyed playing the violin, I loved playing the piano and that became my focus.” Her love for music granted her the opportunity to study piano from Carmen Hall at the Carmen Hall Studio of Piano in American Fork, Utah. The mission of the studio is “To provide a music education that will be used and shared for a lifetime,” and from the sounds of the exquisite music that Monica writes and shares, it is apparent that she was a prize pupil who took the mission statement to heart. In 2004, she graduated from Brigham Young University (BYU) with a BS in Music.
She says, “Writing music has always been a quiet hobby of mine and I never really shared any of my work until recently. Some of my own siblings didn’t know I even wrote music until a year ago.” It was about that time that she decided to record some Christmas music which started out as a gift for her family members, but ultimately turned into a keepsake for her children as well. Realizing the peace and comfort arranging the sacred hymns brought into her home, particularly during trying times, she comments:
I began to have a strong desire to share my music with others – more than just my family – with the hope that these hymns could bring peace and comfort into the homes of others. It is my hope and prayer that my music can touch someone and bring peace into their lives through these sacred hymns.
Monica’s first album is called “Reflections” which is a collection of 8 of her arrangements of LDS sacred hymns and 3 of her own compositions. Samples of the tracks from the album can be listened to on her official website, and full-length tracks can be purchased from her website, yourldsmusicstore.com, cdbaby.com, iTunes, and Amazon. On 17 November 2015, she published a music video of one of the songs from the album, “I Feel My Savior’s Love,” on her YouTube channel. As of late December 2015, the video has been viewed over 2,700 times. About her performances, R Legacy Entertainment has stated, “Scott’s performances remain elegant and understated, defined by an overarching simplicity that speaks to her ability both as an arranger and pianist.”
