It was poet laureate William Shakespeare who once said, “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; and therefore, is winged Cupid painted blind.” From act one, scene one, of the timeless literary classic Romeo and Juliet, quotes the poet, “Love is heavy and light, bright and dark, hot and cold, sick and healthy, asleep and awake – it’s everything except what it is!” And it was the indescribable genius, Albert Einstein, who said, “You can’t blame gravity for falling in love.”
On 18 February 2017, Jacob Grau Privette (known on stage as “Jake Grey”), a Hispanic-American composer, released a new music video on his YouTube channel called “Upside Down.” The lyrics and melody of the song, an original, was written by Jake Grey. He also helped to co-write the video along with Samuel Gaultney. Randy Slaugh created the instrumental and Geena Bocci is the lead actress in the delightful film.
The song is a novella set to music about two young lovers who seek to discover their true passion for one another. In the repeated stanza of the song, the boyfriend (played by Jake) states that he may have said that the relationship is over but the reality is that no matter how hard he tries, he cannot let go of their love because his heart has been won. He tells his soulmate, “I loved you then, I love you now, I loved when my world was upside down.” As their love continues to blossom, they realize just how much they need and mean to each other – “See I need you every day, in every single way, I just can’t get away, from loving you, bae.”
As a person watches the video, it is almost as if they are watching a scene from a modern-day version of Romeo and Juliet and can imagine the two young lovers saying to one another each time they depart, “Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be morrow.” At the end of the video we see the two of them dancing gleefully as the love-crazed boyfriend echoes once again, “I loved you then, I love you now, I loved when my world was upside down.” As the lights dim, you hear the words repeated – “Upside down!” “Upside down!”
