BYU Vocal PointFor a quarter of a century, the sensational a capella group, BYU Vocal Point, has been entertaining audiences with their astounding performances. Every time they take to the stage to perform, or release one of their exciting videos, their audience is left with a sense of wonderment, wanting to hear more. According to their official website, “They have percussion without drums, a rhythm section without a bass—the only instruments on stage are the nine voices of the nationally renowned a cappella group Vocal Point. Hailing from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, this nine-man group takes the songs you hear on the radio and delivers a new rendition, complete with all the complex instrumentation, performed only with the sounds of their mouths.”

Recently, the current members of BYU Vocal Point were joined by over 60 alumni members to create an epic blast from the past a capella mashup to celebrate the group’s silver anniversary. The video features Sophia Osmond, the daughter of the youngest sibling of the world-famous Osmond family, Jimmy Osmond. In the mashup, which features 25+ songs, with at least one popular song representing each year that the group has performed together, Sophia plays the role of Ruby Rogers – a hometown Provo, Utah girl turned actress who is in search of her next leading man. The “one shot” video, meaning it was filmed in one take, with one camera shooting through a highly choreographed set of moves, scene changes, etc., was published on their YouTube channel on 7 April 2016. The video is appropriately titled “Ultimate A Cappella Mashup: 25 Hits, 25 Years” and to date has received over 46,000 views.

In a “25 Years of BYU Vocal Point | A Legacy of Uplifting A Cappella” video released on BYU Vocal Point’s YouTube channel on 17 March 2016, Bob Ahlander, co-founder of Vocal Point, commented:

The thing that’s most exciting to me about Vocal Point today, is that it has essentially the same effect on audiences as we did at the very beginning. I mean the singing is better and the performances are way more entertaining than they used to be, but the effect is the same. People are happy, it’s a joyful experience and they all walk out of there having had something positive happen to them and they could talk about it afterwards. That’s one of the most exciting things, I think, for me.

James Stevens, Artistic Director 2004-2012, further commented that Vocal Point’s “purpose is to uplift and inspire and to enlighten the hearts and the minds of the people within the sound of their voice to the filling of their souls with joy.”

Vocal Point performs for over 50,000 people each year, regularly selling out shows weeks in advance. And they are just getting started. The future appears very promising for the group as plans are in the works to have them begin traveling internationally (currently they are limited to a 275-mile radius), and continuing to grow their online presence to reach people all across the globe.
