Jenny Oaks Baker and her family filmed a wonderful treat for us on location in Salzburg, Austria. Everyone remembers Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, right? Julie Andrews and Christoffer Plumber and the seven children marched melodically into our hearts from the first time we heard them sing. Don’t forget about the beautiful chapels, mansions, mountains, and fountains we get to admire every time we watch this beloved movie musical.

You can tell everyone’s having a good time. And that’s hard to do! I’ve been on vacation before with my big family and it’s hard for mom to keep everyone happy all at once, but you can tell how music has really knit this family together just like it did for the Von Trapps and even the crew who played the Von Trapps in The Sound of Music.
Music is a gift. It’s binding and freeing at the same time—it unifies us in feeling and simultaneously molds us into unique individuals who strive for something greater than a world without music can create. We feel, we cry, we imagine, we dream, we soar because of music.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote in The Day Is Done the following lines about the blessing of music:
And the night shall be filled with music,
And the cares that infest the day
Shall fold their tents like the Arabs
And as silently steal away.
When we fill our souls with music—by listening, writing, singing, or even letting nature’s music penetrate our ears and our hearts—we are filled with gratitude and light. We are elevated in our perspective as we appreciate the meaning of life in whatever circumstances we may be in.
Music is a wondrous thing.
