Eclipse 6

Eclipse 6 is a group comprised of six talented vocalists – Paul Hansen, Kevin Jones, Jake Despain, Dan Kartchner, Shayne Taylor, and James Case – who collectively make up one of the most breathtaking a Cappella groups ever to perform on stage.

The six members originally met at Utah State University where they were performing in a public relations/ ambassador oriented group that was part of the department of Programs and Entertainment. They got their start as a group by arranging their own vocal covers of popular songs and performing them on campus and in the Logan, Utah area. As they garnered a listening audience, they were soon able to record their first album called “Once” which was released in April 2001.

After the release, the band began to focus more on gaining exposure. They auditioned for, and were accepted to compete in, the Northwest Regional Harmony Sweepstakes Competition in which they took first place and were featured in May 2001 at the National Competition along with 8 other Regional winners from around the nation. Meanwhile, back in Utah, the group continued to receive contracts and began performing in concert with such artists as Colors, John Schmidt, Peter Breinholt, and Kurt Bestor.

In September 2001, Kenny Ortega, the 2002 Winter Olympic Ceremonies Director asked Eclipse to perform a featured number as part of the opening ceremonies. Their remarkable performance in front of a vast worldwide audience enabled them to be added as featured entertainers during the closing ceremonies as well. They were also given the opportunity to make a series of appearances at the Medals Plaza where they opened for such acts as Brooks & Dunn, Nelly Furtado, and Train. Shortly after the Olympics, the group was asked to be featured guests along with Larry King and Toby Keith at the “Stadium of Fire,” the 4th of July celebration at BYU’s Cougar Stadium.

In October 2002, Eclipse 6 released their second album called “Think Twice. Also in 2002, they became the winners of the Rocky Mountain Regional Harmony Sweepstakes. In 2003, the group was named “Best Vocal Group” in Utah’s Best of State awards and “Group Recording Artist of the Year” in the Faith Centered Music Association’s Pearl Awards. In October 2003, they released their third album, which was also a Christmas album, called “Three Kings.”

In 2004, Eclipse 6 won three more Pearl Awards to include “Holiday Album of the Year,” and also became runner-up for “Best Holiday Album” in the Contemporary a Cappella Recording Awards. They were also the recipient of two Just Plain Folks Music Awards – the world’s largest music awards program which recognizes independent musicians in over 85 countries. The group has also toured both the United States and Asia. And in 2005, they released their fourth album, a live album, appropriately titled “For Show.”

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, they realize the true source of their continued success, and with gratefulness in their minds and hearts, their fifth album was titled “Grateful Praise.” According to their official website, “Grateful Praise” is “an album that could express the notion that worship through music transcends style and that, regardless of setting, there will always be a level of praise inherent in music that cannot be achieved by any other means.”

In 2009 and 2010 the group toured throughout the United States and Asia. In 2011, they released their second Christmas album called “It’s Christmas Time.”

According to Greenlight Booking, “Seeing the group perform on stage is a unique live experience that will make you swear you’re being lied to. There’s a whole lot of sound, but no bands or musical instruments to be seen anywhere.”
