Nick Sales
Nick Sales was born in Provo, Utah and raised in Spanish Fork, Utah. He is a graduate of the class of 2010 of Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork, Utah. He has also studied at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, and he speaks and records music in both English and Spanish.
Music has always been a part of Nick’s life from an early age. Both of his parents are extraordinary musicians, and he grew up taking music lessons and being in choirs. In his youth, he learned to play the piano, guitar, bass guitar, and drums on his own, and he also learned how to sing. The family even had a family band for a short time before everyone became too busy for it. His father is a sound designer at BYU, so when Nick was in high school, he learned how to record music and could invariably be found writing and recording new songs in the studio at home.
Nick’s genres of music include Pop, Rock, and Acoustic. He comments on his music Facebook page that his interests in music include, “Creating musical fusion, having that inner hope and desire to change lives, make people feel important, acknowledging and giving back to Him who gave me my talents.” He has played for audiences throughout some of Utah’s largest venues and has also had the pleasure of performing with well-known artists such as Lindsey Stirling, and David Archuleta.
Nick is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a two-year full-time mission for the Church in Colombia. He attributes any success that he has been able to obtain to his faith. He comments on his Mormon.org profile, “I am a Mormon because I have known the Gospel is true ever since I was a little kid. Although I’ve grown up in the Church, I am more and more converted to the Gospel each and every day. I’ve felt the Spirit countless times in my life, and it has testified to me of the reality of this Church. God has helped me so much in my life, and I know He continues to help me daily.”
Before leaving for his mission, he also had the privilege of performing in concerts with Shaun Barrowes and Maddie Wilson. When he returned home from his mission, he continued recording music and making music videos, but states that his real passion is creating music that is inspiring and uplifting. Nick recorded a few songs that he had written on his mission, and then started to record an arrangement that he had made of “If You Could Hie To Kolob.” The arrangement for the song and music video would become a four-year project. The video was released on his YouTube channel on 17 September 2016 and has received over 4,000 views.
On Sunday, 18 September 2016, Nick posted the following on his Facebook page, “You guys are AMAZING. I am completely blown away… Within 24 hours of the music video being released, here’s what we’ve been able to accomplish: 15,432 views, 645 likes, 356 shares, 67 comments, 51 friend requests, and three stories from the press.” He continued, “I’ve been getting a lot of messages about how this song has been inspiring people, which is crazy to me because I thought it would just be a cool version of a hymn that people would like! But I’ve learned that God works in mysterious and creative ways to help others, and it’s a huge blessing for us to be a part of that.” He further comments, “I’ve seen too many miracles happen for this video to come together, and I know that this is a small thing I can do to help bring others closer to Christ.”
Nick says that the arrangement for the song and music video first came to him as he started his mission. “As a missionary, I had a lot of free time on p-days, and I discovered that I loved flipping through the hymn book and coming up with interesting arrangements to my favorite hymns,” he says. He also said that as the arrangement for “If You Could Hie To Kolob” started coming together, “The idea hit me that this would make an awesomely epic music video. I instantly knew that I wanted to film it at the Salt Flats in Utah, because since this hymn talks about Kolob, which is another planet, I wanted to film at a place that looked like another planet, and the Salt Flats fits that image perfectly.”
His goal for the music video is two-fold. First, to give members of the church the opportunity to listen to a modern arrangement of a timeless sacred hymn. And second, to have those who aren’t members of the church listen to this song and think “Wow, this is pretty good!” and then realize that it’s actually a hymn from the LDS church. He also invites people to learn more about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by visiting Mormon.org. He has plans in the works to create modern arrangements of few other hymns as well.
Nick started his YouTube channel on 12 June 2009 and as of mid-September 2016 he has garnered 1,928 subscribers, and his videos have been viewed more than 730,000 times. ReverbNation.com reports that when asking Nick about his musical success he says, “I love creating music because I want people to feel the same joy I feel by listing to music that changes your perspective on life, and helps you become the best person you can be.” Some of the artists who have influenced his music are: Benton Paul, EFY artists, David Cook, Michael Bublé, Jason Reeves, Josh Groban, and Shaun Barrowes.
