Mormon music artist, Nancy Hanson, is referred to as “The Natural” by fellow singer-songwriters, and by her supportive fans. She has a gift of simplicity and originality in her music. Her voice reminds listeners of the raw and organic sound of the Indigo Girls and the pure country of John Denver. Although she has won awards and is continually praised for her song-writing and performing, Nancy remains grounded.
Nancy’s love of music goes back to her youth. As a stubborn 11-year-old, she convinced her mother to allow her to begin guitar lessons. She had taken piano for years, but was ready for something new. Nancy grew up listening to James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, and John Denver. Her song-writing in influenced by these and other artists as she developed her love of music.
Nancy was a finalist in the Telluride Folk Festival Troubador Contest in Colorado in 1994, just one year after she began writing songs. Kerrville Folk Festival and Napa Valley Music Folk Festival both awarded Nancy as a New Folk finalist. She went on to win both the Rocky Mountain Folk Festival Songwriting Contest and the Telluride Troubador Contest.
“Drops in a Bucket”, one of Nancy’s most loved songs, took 2nd place in the 2000 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, and “Father in Me” was awarded Mention. Nancy’s played in New York City and Nashville, but likes to stay close to home in Utah with her husband, Dave, and their 3 children.
