Clive Romney
Clive J. Romney from Salt Lake City, Utah, is a forty-plus-year veteran of the music business. He is a Pearl-Award-winning recording producer (including Instrumental Album of the Year, 2002), composer, songwriter, cowboy poet, arranger, teacher, and performer. He directs Romney Musical Services. He serves as Executive Director of Utah Pioneer Heritage Arts and the Legacy Series, and on the board of directors of the Utah Arts Council representing the folk arts. He is also Creative Director for “Story Road Utah,” which tells the pioneer stories of Utah communities and families.
Clive plays a variety of instruments including guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, accordion, percussion. He also plays various ethnic instruments such as dan tranh, charango and bodhran, and some piano. He produces between four and eight albums per year in his recording studio, Pitchfork Studios, and engineers most of his own recordings. He produces music in a variety of genres, but his musical niche is folk, world, acoustic, and orchestral music.
He wrote the lyrics for the animated films Swan Princess II, III and IV, the music and lyrics for “Over The Edge at The Grand Canyon” (commissioned by the National Park), and has had more than four hundred fifty original works recorded and published. However, he considers “Scripture Power,” a Latter-day Saint Primary children’s favorite included in the LDS Children’s Songbook, to be his greatest musical realization.
He founded and directs Enoch Train, an eight-person ensemble that performs and records folk-flavored instrumental arrangements of hymns, children’s songs, and Americana music, incorporating ethnic influences from around the world. Enoch Train were the featured performers for SeaTrek 2001, the reenactment of the emigration of 85,000 Mormon converts to the United States by ship. As part of the production, they performed on board a tall ship, and in places such as Esbjerg, Copenhagen, Gothenberg, Oslo, Greenock (Scotland), Liverpool, Hull, and Portsmouth.
Clive also founded Willingly, a four-person pioneer band that travels the state of Utah presenting pioneer history to elementary schools and community audiences. He has also performed with other ensembles such as Grouse Creek Lily, Caboose, Venlige Fremmede, and Manassas, as well as solo, performing music ranging from Celtic to Pioneer, Country to comedy. He performs as a storyteller and singer-songwriter. His original stories and songs tell of the Utah pioneers and the extraordinary lives they lived because of the circumstances they faced.
Clive taught Introduction to the Music Business and Songwriting at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah, as well as, other music courses at Salt Lake Community College and the University of Utah. He is the producer of 40 episodes of “Histories of the Hymns” and 40 episodes of “Music with a Message” for The Mormon Channel. He also wrote the music for “High Hopes and Riverboats,” the Nauvoo Visitors’ Center show.
Clive Romney is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and his wife, Bonnie, are the parents of five children. Samples of some of his music can be found on his ReverbNation page.
